On this date in 1968, fans walked into Milwaukee Arena to watch the Bucks play their first NBA regular-season game against the Chicago Bulls.
Milwaukee’s sports landscape looked a lot different then. The Braves had left for Atlanta, and the Brewers hadn’t arrived.
For the Bucks, that first season was a struggle. They lost their first five games before beating the Detroit Pistons 134–118, then finished the season with just 27 wins.
A coin flip helped change everything.
Milwaukee won the first pick in the 1969 NBA draft over the Phoenix Suns, giving the Bucks the opportunity to select UCLA star Lew Alcindor, later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. They still had to win a bidding war with the ABA’s New York Nets to bring him here.
By April 1970, the Seattle Pilots had moved to Milwaukee and become the Brewers. The Bucks posted a 12–2 record in the playoffs and won their first NBA championship on April 30, 1971.
Within a few short years, a city that had lost its baseball team had two new teams and an NBA champion to call its own.
Since then, our city waited another 50 years to crown another champion... until next time.
