American grown? So what. American apples are not the best.
If you buy them anytime other than the summer and fall, they've been in cold storage warehouses for months. The American red delicious is a hybrid that was never cultivated for flavor, but for shelf life. You have to add crap to them, like caramel.
The Fuji and Gala imported from the southern hemisphere are best. They come in from New Zealand, Chili and Argentina.
Hold the caramel. Just give me the applesauce. I will put a dab of real Canadian maple syrup on it.
Alex Morton There are many heritage apples that are far better than the ones bred for looks and shelf life. The Cox's Orange, for example, is a wonderfully flavorful apple that never sees store shelves outside of the locale where they are grown. Fresh Macintosh apples, at least the ones grown in Nova Scotia, are far more better than the imported Fujis and Galas. And ... was there ever a strawberry as fine as the tiny wild ones or as tasty as real blackberries, versus the flavorless but pretty olallieberries they try to pass off as blackberries?
Roy Scarbrough It is kind of funny that applesauce would be labeled "dairy free".
Alex Morton It's labelled non-GMO, though there is only one GMO apple, the Arctic Apple. There are, however, lots of hybrids and there's nothing inherently wrong with a hybrid. How come the package doesn't say gluten-free, or does not contain peanuts, just to touch all the bases? Organic would be far better to see on the label ... no poisonous sprays or chemical burnout of the soil is far more relevant.

Alex Morton Same juice concentrate that's now used in the stuff that comes in jugs. I seem to remember that the trick to opening frozen orange juice was to open both ends and push it through, the same way you do with the solid kind of canned cranberry sauce.
