Roy Scarbrough Last week I attended an extraordinary live performance of the Taming of the Shrew. The usual narrative is that Katharina's spirit is finally broken by Petruccio and becomes an obedient wife. On closer examination the play shows Shakespeare undermines that narrative. That narrative set in Italy's Padua is a presented as a play within a play, being observed by a patrons of an English country tavern, one of which is delusional. Katharina is an actor, so her final speech addressing the virtues of a wife's obedience is ironic, and humliates the other character's whose new wives are now showing signs of disobedience, through a ruse that she and Petruccio concoct together to expose gender role hypocrisy. So, perhaps not broken at all.
